Crisp Corners. “Where Fortune Smiles Is Really A John Surman Recording, But Subsequent Re-Releases Have Passed The Credit On To John Mclaughlin (For Obvious Reasons). The Music Is Similar To But More Dense Than Extrapolation. Mclaughlin's Raw Sound Was Starting To Take Shape By This Time And His Impeccable Chops Are On Full Display.
  3. Kazigis

As John was getting ready to record this "Extrapolation" album his roommate Dave Holland got a call from Miles Davis and suddenly John's intended bass player was flying to the U.S.A.. McLaughlin still had two bright young Jazz stars on board in drummer Tony Oxley and sax player John Surman, he eventually added Brian Odges to fill in on bass/5(10).

  5. Sajas

John McLaughlin's first solo album is undeservedly overshadowed by his collaborations with Miles Davis and McLaughlin's own fusion band Mahavishnu Orchestra. Extrapolation is a beautiful jazz record with an enchanting atmosphere. It is not guitar jazz similar to Wes Montgomery or Grant Green, but more band-oriented and with a 'looser' approach.
  6. Gardami

Most likely our favorite album by John McLaughlin – and one that features him in a wonderfully spare setting – alongside John Surman on saxes, Brian Odges on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums. The playing has a free and loose quality that McLaughlin would later lose on some his more fusion-y outings, and the group runs through some excellent post bop originals and modal excursion.

  8. Dar

This is John McLaughlin's debut album as a leader. If you are used to hearing his work with Mahavishnu Orchestra and all his later music this might sound a little rough around the edges in comparison, however it presents a first glimpse of John McLaughlin the player and composer who seems to have emerged with a fully formed identity/5(54).
